Students returned to Kentucky State University on Monday for the first day of classes since two shootings last semester.

In December 19-year-old De’Jon Fox Junior was killed, and another student was injured near a residence hall. Jacob Bard was charged, but a grand jury chose not to indict him. Bard claimed he was defending himself and his family.

In August, two people were also shot and injured near the same dorm. A suspect has not been identified in that shooting.

Kentucky State University students said their first day back was peaceful. Junior Mataye Youman said his day began with a prayer.

Praying for the new year, praying for the new semester, so everything starts out on the right foot,” Youman said.

Camren Stepter said those prayers may have helped.

“First day of classes went well in my opinion. We were able to sit there and focus on class and be able to focus as a college student and be able to sit there and learn,” Stepter said.

KSU students reported an increased law enforcement presence and stricter procedures when they returned. They said those extra measures made them feel safer.
