Attorneys for Fayette County Superintendent Dr. Demetrus Liggins are now claiming that the Fayette County Board of Education violated open meeting laws by discussing Liggins’ resignation in closed session.

An open records complaint alleges that the board violated Kentucky law by:

  • Discussing resignation in closed session
  • Not identifying why the board was entering closed session
  • Conducting substantive deliberations in private
  • Making decisions in open session based on the closed session

Liggins’ attorneys are asking that the board:

  • acknowledge the violations in writing
  • Rescind the administrative-leave action
  • Restore Liggins to the office of superintendent
  • Rescind the acting superintendent designation
  • Suspend actions that came from the closed session
  • Issue a public correction

Board of Education Chair Tyler Murphy said the actions taken by the Board on June 10 and the Board’s leave notice to Dr. Liggins were legal and appropriate.
