Louisville Zoo’s male Sumatran tiger dies

SHARE NOW

The Louisville Zoo says a 16-year-old male Sumatran tiger who arrived in late 2022 has died.

The Zoo says Kami Sambal (cam-me -sahm-ball) was humanely euthanized by Zoo medical staff made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize him after he began showing signs of advanced age following an unexpected and rapid decline in his health.

Kami leaves behind a notable legacy. With his partner, 14-year-old female Jingga, Kami sired 6 cubs. The most recent offspring was a male cub born on July 23.

With less than 400 Sumatran tigers remaining in the wild, zoo officials say the birth of Kami’s cub is an important milestone.

Kami’s transfer to the Louisville Zoo included a breeding recommendation from the Sumatran tiger Species Survival Plan. The Zoo says the successful pairing of Jingga and Kami is a significant addition to this unique tiger population.

The newborn Sumatran tiger is bonding with his mom and not yet on public display. You can follow along as the youngster grows up by clicking here.
